Aspen room

Growing in independence, knowledge and confidence…

The Aspen room program is designed to meet the unique needs of your older Preschool age child.

The curriculum is expanded to include more group experiences and activities that support independence, social cohesion, and which prepare your child for the introduction of basic academic subjects.

Aspen Room activities also support and enrich your child’s oral language and literacy skills, as well as basic math and science skills.

The following developmental skills are core to the Aspen Room curriculum:

Social & Emotional Growth

In the Aspen room we emphasize your child’s recognition of the importance of self within your family, peer groups and the classroom community. While continuing work toward greater independence, of equal importance is your child’s ability to work and play cooperatively with others.

Language & Literacy

Children are encouraged to express their thoughts and ideas with clarity through group exercises called “sharing” in which each child will make a personal introduction and share a bit about an object of interest.

Math

The foundation for basic mathematics is laid through naming and recognizing basic geometric shapes, recognizing and counting numbers 1 – 30, and sorting objects into groups. We also introduce simple cooking exercises which include elements of measurement and sequencing.

Science

Basic scientific concepts are first explored through activities in which your child will learn about the seasons and the calendar. Lessons about different species of animals and plants spark further explorations, as does the introduction of primary, secondary and tertiary colors.

The seeds of early reading are planted by presenting the letters of the alphabet, early reading concepts and name recognition.

Fine Motor Skills

Motor coordination continues to be refined even further through the development of self-care skills, use of scissors, utensils, beads, and a variety of writing instruments.
